Whangārei Hospital is Northland District Health Board’s largest hospital and provides secondary specialist care to all of Northland. Prior to the newly built Catheter Laboratory completed in May 2021, Northland DHB used Auckland City Hospital for all patients requiring Cath Lab assessment or treatment.
This project included:
- Enabling works
- Demolition works (excavation, resurfacing of carpark levels and civil works to allow for ramping into Cath Lab plant room, maintaining existing access into basement/storage under medical day stay building)
- Alterations to existing buildings (outpatient & inpatient connections)
- Catheter Lab plant room
- Catheter Lab clinical and support zones
The Catheter Laboratory clinical and support zone included one Cath Lab procedure room, with 2 recovery bed bays, and 4 recovery chair bays.
The aim of establishing a Cardiac Catheter Laboratory (CCL) at Whangārei Hospital was to enable equity of service and support the holistic patient/whānau focused healthcare.
This facility provides:
- Angio/angioplasty (patients who have had a heart attack/event)
- Investigation of heart failure
- Future proofing to allow for other procedures ie: renal, vascular, and pacemakers
This development is an interim location (approximately 10 years) to enable an appropriate model of care and the spatial needs to support timely, and best, practice care in this family focused service. The end location will be within the new Whangārei Hospital.
Patient experience has been greatly improved as patients are not having to travel to Auckland for these critical diagnostic and procedural treatments.
The project was delivered on time and on budget. It included significant stakeholder consultation and workshops to ensure all clinical requirements are met within a very limited building footprint. The project’s success represents Klein’s ability to support interface and technical input with suppliers of complex equipment.
