Installation of two new MRI machines and associated recovery, reporting and staff spaces into the existing shell space on Level 1 of the Harley Gray building at Middlemore Hospital.

At the time of design for this building, standard Greenstar tools were not available for healthcare projects in New Zealand.

The Clinical Services Building (by Klein Architects) was planned to have two MRI installed at a later date. The installation of the new MRI benefited from not having to contend with the constraints of the main building construction and aligning with a complicated MRI procurement process and fitout. The base building was strong enough to support the equipment and building services sized for the planned fitout. Risers were located on outside of the building for easy future access which worked well during the construction of this project.

Smooth construction process was delivered on budget with Practec as main contractor and ACEPT doing the MRI fit out.

The forward planning of the main building shell undertaken by Klein was key to the success of this subsequent project. Easy access to risers, service platforms and plant space, electrical capacity and back up generators were all sized to accommodate the future radiology and MRI projects. The utilisation of enclosed adjacent shell space made construction planning and deliveries smooth with minimal delays due to weather, etc.
