Rapidly evolving technology can have a very tangible flow-on effect for healthcare environments. So when Intra required an all-new interventional angiography suite in North Harbour, Klein took the opportunity to reappraise the relationship between staff, patients and medical facilities.
New premises will prompt many an organisation to take stock and look to the future – but particularly so for technology-driven healthcare providers. That was certainly the case when world-leading image-guided healthcare specialist Intra approached us. With a new tenancy in place at the recently completed Southern Cross Wairau Road campus, their vision was to develop a world-class interventional angiography suite.
The project was a successful collaboration between Klein (architect) and Paterson Architecture Collective (interior design). Our key design focus was the patient experience. With advances in imaging technology, medical procedures are becoming less invasive, with shorter recovery times. As a result, patients are often able to walk out of the theatre immediately after a procedure.
This encouraged a rethink of traditional recovery spaces. Instead of isolated recovery cubicles, Intra patients now find themselves recuperating in a light-filled lounge with Scandinavian furniture – complete with expansive views of Rangitoto Island.
Intra’s new angiography laboratory provides a clean, calming and friendly experience. A 'live night sky' ceiling twinkles subtly during procedures, putting patients at ease.
The project features exacting attention to detail throughout – from the sculptural form of the Anegre timber veneer reception, right through to small elements like the bed head panels, which are custom routed with three-dimensional designs.
The Intra angiography suite represents the first of its kind in the world, and is set among some of the latest medical imaging technology available.
