Intra provides interventional image-guided healthcare across a range of specialisations – cardiology, radiology and oncology – at its recently refurbished facilities in the St Catherine’s building on the MercyAscot Hospital campus in Epsom. Intra operates two angiography catheter laboratories and a minor procedure room with associated clinical, staff and patient spaces which were expanded and refurbished over two floors as part of this project.

Intra had the opportunity to expand their facilities into a newly vacated adjacent tenancy on the ground floor, enabling a comprehensive upgrade of the angiography machine, procedure room and staff areas. This expansion allowed for improved spatial flows including inwards goods and significantly enhanced the patient experience. The first floor finishes were also refurbished to bring it in line with ground floor improvements while keeping within the budget.

The project successfully addressed and overcame several key complexities, including:

  • Maintaining one operational cathlab at all times while working within a live hospital campus with interconnected services.
  • Integrating a modern ventilation system into a 1980s building with asbestos cladding.
  • Responding to unexpected site conditions and upgrading existing building steelwork to support the new catheter arm requirements.
  • Removal and installation of the new medical imaging equipment along existing hospital corridors.
  • Enhancing passive fire separation between floors.
  • Continuously integrating evolving third-party clinical equipment.

Intra’s expansion and refurbishment successfully enhanced the operational efficiency, improved clinical and functional flows, and elevated patient experience within a limited floor space. This strategic upgrade ensures Intra continues to provide top-tier image-guided healthcare for the people of Tāmaki Makaurau.
