Officially opened by Prime Minister John Key in 2016, the Burwood Hospital Redevelopment spearheaded the largest and most complex health building project in New Zealand’s history. Today, this multi-award-winning hospital plays a key role in delivering Canterbury’s world-class healthcare services.

Sculptural, light-infused and generously proportioned, the new Burwood Hospital in Christchurch never fails to impress. Spread across an expansive 29,400m2 of building area, this state-of-the-art healthcare facility is wellness design on an epic scale. As a specialist rehabilitation facility, the hospital provides older adults assessment and treatment wards, a specialist stroke ward, an adult rehabilitation ward catering for brain injury and two psychiatric services for the elderly catering for dementia and other mental health conditions.

The redevelopment was extensive to say the least – encompassing 230 new inpatient beds, a new 1100m² radiology department, a 2500m² outpatient and procedural area, and 2400m² of clinical administration and community teams area. The project also included a new main entry atrium with an information centre, retail space and cafeteria – as well as a new kitchen and back-of-house support areas.

Klein were engaged directly by the Ministry of Health to lead the master planning and concept design, continuing on with responsibility for the clinical fit-out including health planning and interior architecture. The design solution was an exercise perhaps best described as functional elegance – blending visual appeal with the health and wellbeing needs of patients, and the workspace considerations of hospital staff.

Despite its vast size and varied facilities, the use of native timber and ample natural lighting contributes to a harmonious and visually consistent environment. A conscious focus on active design encourages both staff and patients to engage in physical movement – most notably with the building’s feature stairwells.

Since completion, we’re proud to say the Burwood Hospital Redevelopment has been the recipient of multiple architectural and industry awards.

This project was delivered by Jasmax, Klein and Sheppard & Rout in association. Internal peer review provided by Silver Thomas Hanley.
